Talk:Witches (Setting)

Using Rich Burlew's guide for world building (Found here), I've come up with a sort of list. I've decided to post it here so that everyone could see it, and so I don't lose it.

Purpose: Publication among TG. I want a setting that is interesting enough that somebody other than me would want to play it, and I have yet to find a group of RPers that I respect more than the TGers.

Overriding Story: The PCs (and other Witches) are protecting the fringes of the world from Fey. If they don't, the Unreal World would nibble away at the world until nothing remained.

Technology: Dark Ages, with magical weapons and armor being rare. Excalibur is a +1 Defending Longsword, instead of a +5 Defending Holy Vorpal Longsword like it would be in Greyhawk.

Climate: temperate rural, with the big cities being places far off, and deserts or tundras being the exceptions for locations. The PCs won't do much travelling, so I wouldn't suggest an alternative climate unless the GM wants to have a twist.

Breaks from the Assumptions: 1. Gods aren't active 2. There are no alignments 3. There is no 'Divine' magic 4. Magic weapons and armor are very rare

Class Decision: DROP ALL NON-MAGICAL CLASSES! No fighters, no rouges, no monks. If they don't have magical abilities, they're pretty much useless against the Fey. BUT, each of those classes fill a niche. Solution? Create magical classes that incorporate those niches. We need a fighter-analog, so we'll make a Witch that focuses on melee spell casting!

Race Decisions: Elves are Fey, and are essentially bad guys.

Halflings are out. Too much like gnomes, which I want to keep. They might make an appearance as feral yet intelligent creatures, sort of like they do in Comte's Zenith.

Gnomes kick out Halflings. They're the replacement for traditional elves: a race of mysterious people that live in the wilds. They are friendly with the witches though. Perhaps they trained the first human witch? Anyway, Gnomes aren't human, but they aren't Fey either, so as far the Witches are concerned, they're friendly

Half-Orcs are replaced with straight Orcs. The aren't a usual PC race, but it can happen. Most of the time Orcs might be a non-fey matter to deal with ("Pa! A group a' Orc Harley-Riders showed up in town and are makin' a mess a' things!" "Son, go grab my staff. The fireball one.")

Dwarves are straight out not allowed as PCs. They live in their mines digging up metal, building Excaliburs and such. Any magical weapons come from the dwarves, but they don't get invovled with Fey matters. Think the traditional dwarves from Celtic mythology.

Politics: Do I want competeting organizations of witches? Perhaps along the lines of Mages: 4 or 5 'orders' and each order has member of each class. I'm not sure that self-trained Witches would easily fall into organizations...
