The "boiling" effect is little more than violent underwater releases of volcanic gas which lead to the appearance of boiling. While the selfsame deposits of gases can become quite hot, the risk of death is greatly exaggerated. Likewise, the pitch that is reported to burn on the surface of the water is, at least in part, placed there by the benighted savages that make the island their home to pollute the fisheries of whichever tribe they happen to consider an enemy at that particular moment.
