Science fiction is a genre where the world conforms to the natural laws of reality - for the most part. Some hand-waving is often used to explain away scientific impossibilities such as faster-than-light travel. The more hand-waving is done, the more science fiction becomes sci-fi, which explains away its implausible things with the high-tech equivalent of "a wizard did it."
The other genre is fantasy.
