Sometimes, when people die with unfinished, they become ghosts. Those who have the most drive to continue living, without the means to do so, become phantoms - solid ghosts that hold the semblance of life due to sheer willpower.

Though a phantom's body is a silvery reflection of their former form, the ectoplasm that composes that body is solid to the touch. They are held together by subconscious rage, sorrow, grief or whatever emotion has caused them to rise from the grave. So strong is this emotion that it takes a conscious effort to stop being solid.

The clarity of purpose behind their resurrection means that phantoms are not mindless like many other undead, although it does make them somewhat single-minded instead.

Play a phantom if you want...

  • to be a spooky ghost.
  • to search for the true path to eternal rest, or haunt the world forever as a spirit of vengeance.
  • to be a member of a race that favors the monk, ranger and rogue classes.

Racial Backgrounds

Betrayed

You were knifed in the back, or left to die, but either way you went to your death knowing you had been betrayed by someone you trusted with your life. Your anger has brought you back, made you solid, so you can wrap your fingers around their neck and choke the life out of them. Are you bristling with rage? Or are you calmly plotting your revenge? Is vengeance everything to you? What if your betrayer has already died?

Associated Skills: Intimidate, Streetwise

Didn't Let Go

Forget anger or sorrow, the reason you stuck around is that you just didn't want to die. There was so much left to do! What do you want to do with your newfound life? Are you only just taking up adventuring due to your presumably-unkillable form? Or were you an adventurer before you died? Has being dead made you appreciate life more?

Associated Skills: Endurance, Heal

Lost Love

You lost the love of your life to tragedy, breaking your heart so badly it has brought you back after death through the power of grief. Does your lost love already wander the world as a spirit? Or have you been separated once again, with you stuck in the mortal plane? Are you seeking a way to lay your soul to rest?

Associated Skills: Diplomacy, Insight

Racial Paragon Path: Wraithborn

"I have never yet heard of a murderer who was not afraid of a ghost."

Prerequisite: Phantom

Ghostwalk Action (11th level): When you spend an action point, you gain phasing and insubstantial until the end of your next turn.
