Pale, Slender, and Tall was how the myths and legends described the Elven people. The full gravity and reality of that description did not sink in until the first Elf arrived in a human settlement. Preternaturally tall with eerie pale skin, the mere appearance of Elves is disconcerting to most humans. The average human lives into his 40s, the average elf is immortal as far as anyone knows. If an elf has died of old age, the elves haven't told anyone else that it happened.

An elf adventuring in human lands is almost certainly a younger elf, only 200 or 300. Most elvish children remain in the forest holds, deep and out of sight, studying the world and its wonders. An Elf child of only 50 or 60 often knows as much as the finest human scholars and experts. Living in elf society exclusively most elves who venture out into the world do so with no sense of time. It is easy for an elf to spend hours explaining trivial minutia over an offhanded statement, or to spend weeks simply watching a tree to observe its changes.
