Halcyon Class

The Halcyon class was introduced a hundred years ago by the Martian Shipyards as an answer to the Killithid light bulk freighter. Although the Killithid design had a massive user base at the time (more than a thousand shipyards across the galaxy were licensed to produce them), the Martian design improved in several important areas without sacrificing the already tight cargo space. The most important of these features was the more efficient engines capable of a higher acceleration than the older Killithid standard, and which cut the average travel time in system by a standard day (about 25 hours). Other improvements included an enhanced defense array and point defense systems, as well as a tweaked offloading system and internal automation.

Each one is capable of carrying about 400 standard shipping containers which are each a bit smaller than the ones that humanity used for a long time. These containers are kept in the main hold which is roughly shaped like a flattened cylinder and forms the main body of the ship. The engines take up a block at the rear of the ship, with thrusters extending across both sides. Above that, the crew module is a two deck section set on the rear section of the top hull, with the top deck extending above the main plating. Dotted around the hull are small laser batteries and field emitters, intended to protect the ship against rocky debris (and, in the worst cases, against missiles). Also, as is allowed on small, fast freight ships, two heavy beam cannons dot the top and bottom of the ship as a deterrent to pirates and hijackers.

The Ophelia is fairly typical of its class, even though it was produced five hundred light years away from the Martian Shipyards and Sol. Its four crew cabins and captain's quarters are the standard sizes, and an ample galley and autofac mean that even long journeys can be accommodated for. In addition, the Ophelia has recently been refitted with brand new, twin fusion reactors a little more powerful and efficient than her previous cores. These new reactors allow her a higher gate-to-gate speed than most other ships of her class as well as providing ample power for all her systems. The Ophelia's cargo bay may not be massive, but her speed and size means that she can enter almost any port in space and do it quicker than her competitors.
