A defiler tears the life from the world to fuel his magic.

You gain the Arcane Defiling power. In addition, at the start of each encounter you can make an Arcana check with a DC dependent on the encounter’s location (see table below). For every 3 the check exceeds the DC by add a devastation point to your devastation pool (minimum of 1). Your devastation pool lasts until the end of the encounter.

Additionally you render the land around you inhospitable to all life in a radius that depends on type of area you are in (see table below). Medium to large plants in the radius wither and die, while small plants actually turn to a light ash. Animals in the area feel sick, but are otherwise unaffected.

Terrain Type Examples DC Defiling Radius
Lush Forest, opulent gardens 12 + 1/2 level Level + devastation pool
Verdant Oases, crop fields 14 + 1/2 level (Level + devastation pool) x2
Habitable Cities, villages 16 + 1/2 level (Level + devastation pool) x5
Arid Scrub plains, badlands 18 + 1/2 level (Level + devastation pool) x10
Barren High desert, Sea of Silt 20 + 1/2 level (Level + devastation pool) x20

Becoming a Defiler

An arcane character can use Defiling Magic a number of times per day equal to their level with no ill effects. If at any time they exceed that, the character has lost their ability to use preserving magic and becomes a defiler. Mechanically, this means that a character must use Defiling Magic every encounter, or be unable to use any arcane powers during that encounter. Additionally, the character loses one healing surge due to the negative effects of channeling life forces so recklessly.

The Road to Redemption

It’s possible for a defiler to reverse their course, and return to the practice of preserving. Generally this requires the defiler to shun using magic of any kind for one month per level. During this time the character should be working hard and studying in an attempt to temper his recklessness. Additionally, a quest of atonement of some kind is normally required before the defiler can once again use magic responsibly and become a preserver.

If redeemed, the character regains the healing surge they lost from becoming a defiler and can once again use spells normally during an encounter. However, if a redeemed preserver ever again uses Defiling Magic again they immediately become a defiler. That rush of power erases all of the self control the character had learned.
