The Setting

This game is set in a modern day Japan with some alternate-history elements and features a detailed political landscape and complex characters. The player characters are either Yakuza or their trusted affiliates: Noboru Soga, Ichiro Tanaka, and Kenichi Saito are all full Yakuza, while Naomi Aoshima and Melissa Mayfield are people who are repaying favors to the Soga crime family. Taka Jō is a friend of the crime family, not a full Yakuza by any means, but an associate they generally trust.

The Soga clan has encountered difficulties of late. One of their officers passed away suddenly, an affiliated crime family they've been ordered to prop up has just entered a very troubled period, and a rival criminal gang has decided to try to eject Soga from Tokyo.

Organizations

Inagawa Syndicate

The second largest criminal syndicate in Japan, now under new leadership. They are primarily active in the Tokyo region. The Patriotic Society was formerly a part of the Inagawa, but defected to the Yamaguchi syndicate. The Inagawa have been trying to win them back.

Patriotic Society (the Kokusui-kai)

A crime organization based in Tokyo Japan which is experiencing troubles. Their primary offices are in a building in the Ginzu neighborhood, above the karaoke bar Bagus Gorufā. 500 strong, they are associated with, and answerable to, the Yamaguchi group.

Soga Clan

A crime family based in Kobe Japan which is trying to make inroads in Tokyo. They are associated with, and answerable to, the Yamaguchi syndicate (possibly the largest crime syndicate in the world). The Soga clan's head is personal friends with the head of the Yamaguchi clan.

Yamada Clan

A crime family that specializes in providing non-conventional support and fighters to Yamaguchi group families and affiliates. Yamada employs many ex-priests and other strange matches for a criminal gang.

Yamaguchi Clan

The top leadership of the Yamaguchi syndicate are all members of the same family, usually through legal adoptions and marriages, though many are also related by blood.

Yamaguchi Syndicate

The largest criminal syndicate in Japan, and likely in the world. The Yamaguchi Clan leads them, and has been clever in making good political and diplomatic moves to bring smaller crime families into the syndicate.
